GOLDEN GIRLS SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION
 OF THE NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA

Welcome

The Golden Girls women's softball association was founded in 1989 to field a senior women's softball team to play in a tournament in Michigan.  Since then, the association formed its own intramural league and has established a national reputation with its traveling tournament teams.  The primary goal of the organization has become to promote and encourage participation in amateur sports, especially slow pitch softball, by women aged 40 and over in the National Capital Area.   Players of all abilities and experience levels are encouraged to participate.  There is an outdoor program of intramural games in the Spring and Fall and an indoor winter program of exercise, skill drills and games.  League membership consists of over 150 players each year, primarily from Northern Virginia, but also from Maryland, the District of Columbia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Florida, Arizona, Texas, New Jersey and Illinois.

Golden Girls teams have participated in softball tournaments in Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Tennessee, New York, Nevada and Canada. The Golden Girls won the Senior Softball World Series (SSWS) (www.nascs.org) in 1995, 1997 and 2003. The Golden Girls form teams to play in the National Senior Games (the "Senior Olympics"), www.nsga.com, that take place in odd-numbered years.  They have traveled to Syracuse, NY, Baton Rouge, LA, San Antonio, TX, and Orlando, FL and have returned bearing medals and ribbons for their athletic efforts. At the Olympics, players from all teams participate in the traditional "State pin swapping" where old acquaintances are renewed and new ones are made.  It's always a challenge to get at least one pin for each state represented on the ball field.  Many Golden Girls also participate in other sports at the Senior Olympics such as archery, swimming, horseshoes, tennis, track and field, etc.
