55+ Olympic Team Information

The Senior Olympics originally allowed 55 year olds and older into the games.  So the first time the Golden Girls sent a team, it was a mixture of all age groups because there was only one division for women.  All women’s teams played in this division with no age bracket discrimination.

In 1991 the Golden Girls sent a team to Syracuse, NY and they won the gold medal.  Hazel Parker, Edie Goeller were among the players that year.  The whole team rode into the stadium in a big ol stretch limo.  Minor and Pat Blackmon were the coaches.  Pat was too young to play by my calculations.

In 1993, the team went to Baton Rouge, LA.  This is still only one team from the Golden Girls and one division for women in the senior games.  They won a silver medal.

In 1995, the team went to San Antonio, TX.  Diane Minor and Lucy Sale were the coaches.  The Golden Girls played the dreaded Ohio Cardinals and came in second for a silver medal again.  Members included:

Bettie Pell, Margaret Keys, Lora, Marlene Dunsmore, Rita Ritter, Flora Clark, K.C. Casey, Joni Giampa, Helen Boyd, Betsy Duce, Janet Weeks, Pat Blackmon, Helen Goetzke, Jane Rogers, Bev Raudenbush, Betty, DeLa Cruz, and Barb Jamborsky

In 1997, the team went to Tucson, AZ.  Diane Minor and Lucy Sale were the coaches.  The Golden Girls came in fourth place and got a yellow ribbon.

In 1999, the team went to Orlando, FL for the last senior games of the century.  Lucy Sale and Lisa Kennemur were the coaches.  We squeezed every ounce of talent and spirit out of all the gals and came in a remarkable fourth place.  It was a great effort, but a tough Michigan team edged us out.   Members included:

Elaine Joy, Joanne Malone, Donna Turgeon, Toni Letaw, Marilyn Mallery, R. B. Barber, Midge Holmes , Sharon Helton, Darlene Huntsinger, Dian Castle, Pat Calder, Terri Blaeuer, Catherine Miescier, Bettie Pell, Joyce Pfeffer, Janet Weeks and scorekeeper Judy (Smitty) Smith.

The 2001 team traveled to Baton Rouge, LA.  Lucy Sale coached and  Judy (Smitty) Smith was the scorekeeper.  Yet again the team took home the fourth place ribbon.  Members included:

Pat Belling, Dian Castle, Stacy Colby, Kathryn Fulford, Pat Gogolak, Sharon Helton, Darlene Huntsinger, Katie Johnson, Roc Johnson, Elaine Joy, Karin Lawson, Marilyn Mallery, Gloria Mathers, Joyce Pfeffer, Rita Ritter, Anne Romm, Lynn Smith and Donna Turgeon.

The 2003 team won the Bronze Medal at the National Senior Olympics in Hampton Roads, Virginia.  Outstanding hitting and dazzling base running highlighted the offensive success of the team.  Consistent pitching by Linda "Baz" Baziluik and exciting double plays were hallmarks of the defense.  Annette Pervere led the team in batting with a .692 average, followed closely by Gloria Mathers at .667.  Winning the bronze medal was the result of over a year of practice and dedication by all of the team members, coaches, fans, and friends.
