Our nominee in 1996 was Beth Hersey.
Beth has been on the board of the Golden Girls organization every year. She is one of those people that an organization can not be without.
She
has served in every capacity from Vice President to Secretary, headed our social
committees, and has been involved in all aspects of the Golden Girls. Beth reached fame by hitting a grand slam home run in the 1997 Olympics
to carry home the gold medal for the 60’s team. The annual Christmas party that she hosts for the Golden Girls should not
be missed. I should add that Beth has also contributed her husband George, as
volunteer umpire for our league and coach of several of our teams.

In 1997 Pat Blackmon was honored at the Fairfax county
senior recognition luncheon for her contributions to the Golden Girls. She was
the first President of the Golden Girls and served three other years in that
capacity. She is a strong advocate
of women’s softball and is known for her leadership in developing Senior
Women’s softball all over the country.

In 1998 Bettie Pell
was our honoree at the annual luncheon. What in the world would we do without Bettie Pell to worry about us.
Bettie was president of the Golden Girls in 1993 and 1994. Bettie has a reputation of being a worry wort, but without Bettie to
worry about getting us fields, rooms for meetings, breakfasts, getting door
prizes, selling raffle tickets to raise money for our teams and everything that
needs doing, I don’t know now we would have survived. I am thrilled to have
Bettie on our 60’s Olympic team this year because I know nothing will be
overlooked.

In 1999 Donna Packard was finally honored.
This was delayed a year because in 1998 Donna was riding her bicycle
across country from San Diego CA to Saint Augustine FL and wasn’t in town for
the luncheon. Donna was our first Publicity Chairman and obviously did a
tremendous job as our growth went from 17 to over a hundred during those first
few years. Donna is someone that always participates, and had been continuously
on the board in one capacity or another for ten years. Donna was also on the first Gold medal Olympic team in Syracuse NY in
1991.

The year 2000 found Toni Letaw
as our senior of the year. Toni has played on many National Championship teams, including the 1995
World Series, where she was named MVP, The 1997 World Series, and many of our
ISSA World Championship teams. Toni took over publicity from Donna in 1995 and
held that post for 6 years. Toni is
a real pro at getting articles printed in all the local papers and always makes
sure the reports of our winnings reached home. She managed to get letters from the Governor and The Office of the
President of the USA congratulating our teams. You can count on Toni to see that
the minutes of our monthly board meetings are perfect. Another Golden Girls that
has continuously served our organization.

In the year 2001 we felt we had to honor two members of the Golden Girls. They are Joyce Pfeffer (a past president) 1997 and 1998 and Edie Goeller. Edie Goeller was one of the Charter members of the Golden Girls and also played on the first Olympic team in Syracuse that won the Gold. Edie has single-handedly put out our directory for 12 years. She is another one of our members that we cannot do without. Joyce Pfeffer had managed to keep her hand in almost everything we do and also has been a very active member of our cousin organization Northern Virginia Senior Softball. Along with serving her time as President of the Golden Girls, Joyce has been active in putting out the newsletter and served on many other committees. |
| In 2002 Barbara Jamborsky was honored. Barbara led the Karat Patch program for many seasons, giving her time, patience and expertise. Most every year Barbara has been a skilled coach for several teams and she has also been an active Golden Girls Board Member. |
