History of the Golden Girls

The Golden Girls began in 1989. It consists of league teams, tournament teams, and olympic teams. The league teams play in the spring and fall, against each other. They have fun and get some exercise too. To find out more about the current league teams click here.

Golden Girls teams have participated in softball tournaments in Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Tennessee, Canada and Japan.  Golden Girls qualified for the Senior Softball World Series in Orlando in 1994 and came in second in the first-ever women’s division.  In 1995 and 1997 they won the Senior Softball World Series.  In 1995 through 1999 the Golden Girls won the International Senior Softball Association World Championships held in Manassas, VA.  In 1998 the 60+ Golden Girls team won the first-ever USSSA Senior Women’s World Tournament in Nashville, TN.  The 50+ team finished second in their age group.  In 1999 both teams won their age groups in Sherwood, AZ. In 2002 at the World Series the 50+ team placed third and the 55+ team tied for fifth place. In 2003 the 50+ team won first place at the World Series.

In odd-numbered years, the Golden Girls assemble Senior Olympics softball teams.  In 1991 the team won the gold medal at the Syracuse, NY, Olympics; in 1993, the silver medal in Baton Rouge, LA; and in 1995, the gold medal in the 60-and-over age group and the silver medal in the 55-and-over age group in San Antonio, TX.  In 1997 four teams participated in the Senior Olympics in Tucson, AZ, and fared as follows: 50+, gold; 65+, silver; 55+ and 60+ each, fourth place ribbons.  Four teams went to the Senior Olympics in Orlando, FL, in October 1999, winning gold (60+), silver (65+), bronze (50+) and fourth (55+).  Four teams went to the Senior Olympics in Baton Rouge, LA, in 2001.  The 60+ team brought home the silver medal. In 2003 the 55+ team won the bronze medal, the 60+ team won gold, and the 70+ team won silver.
