Hall of Famers

The Golden Girls organization has been in existence since 1989, and over that time several of our members have received the ultimate honor of being inducted into the Washington Metropolitan Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame.

In 1991 Gloria Brattain was inducted for a career of outstanding softball and especially for her amazing effort is pitching the Golden girls to a Gold Medal in the 1991 Senior Olympics.  That effort was closely followed by the MVP award for pitching her team (the fifties Golden Girls Tournament team) to the Tournament win at the NASCA tournament in Detroit the following week
In 1994 Pat Blackmon, a charter member of the Golden Girls and past president of the organization for several years, was inducted into the Washington Metropolitan Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame.  Pat combined pitching with coaching to lead her team to nine tournament wins in eleven tries in the early 1990’s.

In 2000 Pat was the first woman inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame.

Over the years her accomplishments have been numerous, with two World Series wins, two Gold Medals in the Olympics, six ISSA World Championships, two USSSA world titles and numerous MVP and all star awards and tournament wins.

In 1996 Janet Hull, at the age of 78 (the oldest member of the Golden Girls) was inducted into the Anne Arundel County Hall of Fame.  Janet was honored for her forty years as an accomplished softball player, tennis standout and winner of many track and field events ever since high school.  Janet traveled from Baltimore every weekend and for practice and played on the 1991 Olympic team in Syracuse that won the Gold.  She won numerous medals in the Senior Olympics in tennis and track and field events.

In 1997 Helen Boyd, a member of the Golden Girls since 1992 was put up for induction to the Metropolitan slow-pitch Hall of Fame in the Administrator category for her wonderful work in organizing a senior women’s league in Montgomery County Maryland.  Helen has played for many years with the 55-tournament team and many Olympic teams including the 60+ Gold Medal winning 1999 team.

In the year 1999 the Golden Girls had two members inducted in the Washington Metropolitan Slow Pitch Hall of Fame.  Katie Johnson in the Player Category and Helen Goetzke in the Manager category.  Helen was being honored for taking the 50’s Olympic team to a Gold Medal in 1997.  Helen has managed many of the Golden girl teams including the World Series win in 1995.  Katie Johnson had a great career before joining the Golden Girls but we know her best for being on almost every tournament team and Olympic team that has won National and World titles.  Including the 1995 and 1997 World Series and six International Senior Softball Assoc. world titles.

In 2001 George Hersey was inducted into the Washington Metropolitan Slow Pitch Hall of Fame. George has been a valued coach and manager of the Golden Girls since 1990.
